Amman Art Week kicks off on Thursday and features numerous exhibitions, art talks, and activities, as well the Art Connect Forum at the National Gallery of Fine Arts. Talks include: “The State of Jordanian Art and its Position in the Regional Art Market” with panelists Samia Al Zaru, Mohanna Durra, Lina Attel (Saturday at 11:00 am), “Social Classes and Art in the Middle East” with panelists Barbara Rowel, Amr Toukhy, Jan Kassay, Annemarie Jacir (Saturday at 13:45), and many more. The Art Week also includes Moving Picures; a series of original films (animated films, documentaries and narrative films), curated by Art Week Amman team and Institut français. The first film will be the feature documentary Rafea Solar Mama, which follows a strong-minded Bedouin woman as she struggles against tradition and society as she seeks to become the first solar engineer in Jordan. (Saturday at 7:00 pm at the French Institute)

Rainbow Theater’s film screening schedule includes some exciting independent films from around the world, including spanish director Pedro Almodovar’s latest film Los Amantes Pasajeros (I’m So Excited). When it appears as though the end is in sight, the pilots, flight crew, and passengers of a plane heading to Mexico City look to forget the anguish of the moment and face the greatest danger, which we carry within ourselves. (Tuesday at 7:15 and 9:15)

The Amman Citadel Festival continues, this week presenting the original Sound of Music musical from London in three shows (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday). Details and tickets via karasi.com
