“It’s a platform,” says Sara Abu Alia, the project director of the Amman Street Art Fair, “for those who have a talent in art, and who seek an opportunity to express themselves and show their artwork to people.”

Amman Street Art Fair was an event that gathered the artwork of 30 local artists and talents, along with 4 interactive artists whodrew portraits and graffiti in open air at the roof top of Zara Expo. This event went on for two full days and was organized by Art Medium, an art management company.

What is so distinctive about this fair is that it offered Ammanis the chance to taste and indulge in art in a rather exciting and more interactive way. As one starts moving from an artist’s booth to another, they could never fully understand the diversity of the art being exhibited. Be it abstract or figurative, painted with oil or sketched with chalk, one is swarmed by the rainbow of colors formed from the warmest to the coolest, on mediums that vary from canvas, posters, and photographs or weaved by the florescent strings creating psychedelic art.

Some participants like Raneem Daoud, whom when asked about the reason said, “It was my first real exhibition, I wasn’t really

expecting much… what I loved about the exhibition is that I learned a lot, and I heard different opinions from people, but I never expected people in Jordan to be actually interested that much in my kind of photography.”

For some others they felt it was a rather good start like in the case on Sandra Hiari who says “Since this is my first time exhibiting, I felt the fair model helped facilitate a soft launch into the world of art, also the non-curator aspect was liberating and enabled a diverse range of art products to be put on display.”

Art booths weren’t the only thing on display. “We wanted to add more value to the event by adding an element of entertainment with live performances such as Tequila Band, 962, Shadi Kassis, Zuka Zain and many others, and also by getting food and beverage service,” said Sara.

“When we asked some people about the event, some wanted it to last for much longer, and thought that such an event should last for more days,” said Sarah. As for the art presented, Sara continued, “some gallery owners and established artists thought that the artwork wasn’t as expected. But we think by gathering artists and talents together, this is going to increase the competition and will therefore increase the quality of art presented for the coming years.”

What is next for the Street Art Fair and Art Medium after their first successful public event? “Opening the café des Artiste [on Rainbow Street] was on 26 September 2010, and for the next year we will be organizing two street art fairs,” says Sarah. “We are happy for the positive response from people and their eagerness to know art.”
