A two-week “Sunrise Yoga Challenge” with trainer Tatyana N. begins this week. Enjoy a 1-hour morning yoga practice with kabalabhati pranayama (the breath of fire – cleansing breath) at 7iber Café’s rooftop overlooking Jabal al-Weibdeh. Jordanian architect and painter, Rawan Kakish, presents a new collection of Amman cityscapes and portraits on recycled wooden pallets and metal. Using photographs of elderly people as inspiration for her portraits and archival photographs of Amman as a background to her mixed media collages, Rawan’s work captures spontaneous moments in time that are infused with warmth and nostalgia. This is her second solo exhibition. The exhibit will continue in Nabad Gallery till November 20.
A public lecture titled “Extraordinary Coexistence: Cairo’s City of the Dead” by Moataz Faissal Farid (Co-Founder, Zawia) will take place in downtown Amman this Monday (6:30 pm). The lecture will demonstrate the unique case of Cairo’s “city of the dead”, its founding and evolution. The city, as it is, is an eclectic collage of superposed states; it involves overlapping images of co-existing urban situations. Both the physical existence of the city as a built texture and the social geography of urbanity form a superposed morphology. Cairo’s “city of the dead” is a significant example of this urban superposition, where two very distinct states of existence overlap each other, an extraordinary coexistence of life and death. The lecture will be followed by a conversation with Karla Rothstein (Associate Professor and Director of the Death Lab at Columbia University’s GSAPP).
