Argentinian Films, Theater Festival, Citadel Festival, and More

الأحد 18 آب 2013

The Argentinian Film Week kicks off this evening at the Royal Film Commission and continues until Thursday with two film screenings daily. The schedule includes highly-acclaimed narrative and documentary features, such as “Habi – The Foreigner”, an atmospheric first-time drama about a young Argentine woman assuming a fake Muslim identity. (Wednesday 8:00 pm)

The festival concludes on Thursday with two films around the theme of music: Moacir, a documentary about a Brazilian man who has been living in Argentina for over 25 years, who spent a large part of his life institutionalized in psychiatric hospitals, and has an incredible talent for singing. He pursues his greatest desire of making a record of his songs (Thursday at 6:00 pm). The second is a narrative feature called “Vinyl Days”, about four friends in their thirties, whose relationship is crossed by three major themes: music, friendship and women. (Thursday at 8:00 pm)

It’s a good week for film fans because, in addition to the Argentinian Film Week, the Rainbow Film Club resumes its weekly programming of international and independent cinema after the Ramadan hiatus.

Today’s film is “Quartet”, a 2012 British comedy-drama based on the play by the same title by Ronald Hardwood, which ran in London’s West End from September 1999 until January 2000. The film is Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut, and it takes place in a retirement for gifted musicians, where the annual concert to celebrate Verdi’s birthday is interrupted by the arrival of Jean, an eternal diva and the former wife of one of the residents. (Sunday 7:15 and 9:15 pm)

Jadal’s Cultural Week continues until Wednesday and features a book fair, art exhibition and various activities including a reading of short stories by Hisham Bustani (Tuesday at 8:00 pm), and a concert by local musician Ahmad Farah, a.k.a Perfect and Insane (Wednesday 8:00 pm).

The Amman Citadel Festival kicks off this Tuesday, with a tribute to Abdel Halim Hafez with the Egyptian singer Khaled Selim. On Thursday the festival presents internationally-acclaimed singer Julio Iglesias performing for the first time in Amman. Details about the schedule and tickets here.

There’s plenty more on Amman’s cultural agenda, including the Ammon Theater Festival for emerging theatre groups, which continues until Friday at the Royal Cultural Center with two performances daily (6:30 and 8:00 pm). The festival closes with the play “Empty Cassette” by Jasad for Performing Arts, directed by Joyce Raie and performed by Sara Ghanma and Mohammad Bani Hani. (Thursday and Friday, 8:00 pm)

Wrap up your week with a stroll in Jabal Amman on Saturday touring a group of art galleries and enjoying their exhibitions and special discounts for the “Strolling on Saturdays” activities which continues until October.
