Cultural Week, Theater Festival, Film Screenings, and More

We hope you enjoyed your Eid holiday. Now that Ramadan is over, Amman’s cultural activities pick up  pace, with a theatre festival, film screenings, and various events all happening this week.

Until the Rainbow Film Club resumes its daily screenings next week, they’re offering 1JD screenings of films voted by their Facebook followers, as well as a marathon of Breaking Bad Season 5 and a premiere of Breaking Bad episode 9, this coming Friday. The films to be screened include “Lawrence of Arabia” (Tuesday 8:00 pm), “Gone with the Wind” (Wednesday 8:00 pm), and “Lion King” (Thursday 8:00 pm).

On Saturday you can participate in a sing-along screening of cinema classic and mother of all musicals “Grease”. (Tickets are 5 JD, but attendance is free of charge if you come along in costume (as a T-Bird or a Pink Lady), or a Jo Bedu T-Shirt) (Saturday at 7:30 pm)

The Royal Film Commission is screening the documentary “I Am Breathing”, that tells the remarkable story of Neil Platt, a young architect and new father who is diagnosed with debilitating and terminal Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Within a year, he becomes completely paralyzed but his humour remains. He takes the unusual decision to document his final months. (Thursday at 8:00 pm)

Al-Balad Theater is screening “Vent”, a short documentary about a 15 teenagers who have been involved in Arab Spring events in their countries, and who participated in a workshop titled “ARTiculating Peace”, to share, express and tell their experiences during the Arab Spring and conflict periods then start sketching the anticipated future for their countries through creative arts. The screening will be followed by a discussion. (Wednesday at 7:00 pm).

Also on Wednesday, Jadal cultural center launches a cultural week that continues until August 21 with a book fair, music and theatre performances, poetry and story readings, film screenings, and other activities. (Wednesday at 7:00 pm)

The Ammon Festival for Youth Theater kicks off on Saturday at the Royal Cultural Center with a performance adapted from the 1990 play “Death and the Maiden” by Chilean playwright Ariel Dorfman, directed by theatre students from the University of Jordan’s School of Art and Design, and supervised by theatre director and professor Fadi Skeiker. (Saturday at 8:00 pm)
