Arab Films, Sheikh Imam Songs, Khyam Allami, and More This Week

Amman’s cultural agenda is rich this week, with the Arab Film Festival taking place at the Royal Film Commission, and Rainbow Theater hosting three great live concerts.

The Arab Film Festival’s selection includes award-winning Moroccan film “God’s Horses”, which was inspired by a novel titled “The Stars of Sidi Moumen” by Mahi Binebine and refers to the suicide bombings in Casablanca in 2003. The film tells the story of a family – and specifically two brothers – growing up in a world of drugs and crime in a Moroccan slum. It will be screened in the presence of actor Abdelilah Rachid. (Sunday at 9:30 pm)

Egyptian film “Winter of Discontent” will be screened on Tuesday at 9:30 pm in the presence of actor Salah Al-Hanafi. Set against the momentous backdrop of the whirlwind protests of Cairo’s Tahrir Square that began on January 25th 2011, the film takes us into the lives of a State Security officer, a journalist TV presenter and an activist who works as a programming engineer. The film has won the Muhr Arab Award for Best Actor at Dubai International Film Festival, the Critics Award and Golden Antigone at the Montepllier as well as a Special Mention at Cairo Film Festival.

TamerAbuGhazalehThe festival selection also includes Lebanese drama/comedy “Taxi Ballad”, Palestinian Film “Laila’s Birthday”, Algerian film “How Big Is Your Love?”, and Syrian film “My Last Friend”. All films are subtitled in English and entry is free of charge.

Rainbow Theater presents three live concerts at the end of the week: Iraqi oud player Khyam Al-Lami performs pieces from his album “Resonance/Dissonance” on Thursday, Maryam Saleh performs songs by Sheikh Imam on Friday, and Palestinian singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Tamer Abu Ghazaleh performs on Saturday. Tickets are for JD10 available at the theater, Jo Bedu Weibdeh, Mlabbas City Mall & online through Sajilni.com.
