In November of 2001, London-based Iranian filmmaker Taghi Amirani set out with his film crew into a Taliban-controlled refugee camp in Western Afghanistan on the Iranian bordern intending to make a film about people’s perceptions towards the war on terror, but he found himself there just as events rapidly unfolded and Kabul fell into the hands of the American forces. He made “The Dispossessed”, an intimate portrait of innocent people whose lives were battered by war.
Between 1979 and 1989, Afghanistan experienced a major war between the US-backed Mujahideen forces and the Soviet-backed Afghan government in which over a million Afghans lost their lives. This was followed by the 1990s Afghan civil war, the rise and fall of the extremist Taliban government and the on-going conflict in Afghanistan, where the Karazai Administration is far from controlling the country. The decades of war made Afghanistan the largest producer of refugees and asylum seekers.
The Royal Film Commission in collaboration with 7iber will be screening the film on Thursday, November 1st, at 7:00 pm, at the Film House/Royal Film Commission, followed by a Q&A with the director, Taghi Amirani, who will be present at the screening.
Taghi Amirani is an Iranian physicist turned award-winning documentary filmmaker. He is the Director of Amirani Media, a London-based film and television production company with over 60 hours of programming produced for the world’s leading broadcast networks, including the BBC, Channel 4, PBS, National Geographic, France 3 and Al-Jazeera. Starting out as a director in 1989 he has made 35 documentaries, a couple of fictions shorts, plus a handful of commercials. In 2009 he was awarded a TED Fellowship followed by a TED Senior Fellowship in 2010. Amirani has been also a jury member at many festivals, including International Emmys and Sheffield International Documentary Festival.

في الحقبة بين 1979 و1989، عاشت أفغانستان حرباً ضارية بين قوات المجاهدين المدعومة من الولايات المتحدة و الحكومة الأفغانية بدعم من الاتحاد السوفياتي، أودت بحياة زهاء مليون شخص. عقب ذلك، اندلعت حرب أهلية في التسعينات شهدت صعود ومن ثم سقوط حكم الطالبان إلى يومنا هذا حيث ما زالت ادارة الرئيس كارازاي عاجزة عن بسط سيطرتها على البلاد. هذه النزاعات المتتالية على مدى عقود جعلت من أفغانستان أكبر “صانع” للاجئين والنازحين في العالم.
تقوم الهيئة الملكية للأفلام بالتعاون مع حبر بعرض فيلم “المحرومون” بحضور المخرج تاغي أميراني يوم الخميس ١ تشرين ثاني/نوفمبر، الساعة ٧ مساءً، في نادي الأفلام/الهيئة الملكية للأفلام (#٥ شارع عمر بن الخطاب). يتبع العرض حوار مع المخرج. الفيلم بالانجليزية والفارسية مع ترجمة للانجليزية.
تاغي أميراني عالم فيزيائي اختار صناعة أفلام وثائقية حاز من خلالها عدة جوائز. يدير أميراني شركة “أميراني ميديا” في لندن ، للإنتاج السينمائي والتلفزيوني، والتي أنتجت أكثر من 60 ساعة من البرامج لشبكات البث الرائدة في العالم، من بينها ب”ي بي سي” و”القناة الرابعة” البريطانية و”ناشيونال جيوغرافيك” والقناة الفرنسية الثالثة وقناة الجزيرة. شق أميراني طريقه في إخراج الأفلام عام 1989، حيث أخرج 35 فيلماً وثائقياً وبضعة أفلام روائية طويلة وقصيرة. حاز عام 2009 زمالة في مؤتمر تيدTED العالمي ومن ثم زمالة عليا عام 2010. كما شارك أميراني في لجان تحكيم ضمن مهرجانات مختلفة، من بينها جائزة الإيمي العالمية ومهرجان شيفيلد الدولي للأفلام الوثائقية.
